Product reviewed: GS Storm 1/8th Scale RTR Buggy

I was seriously impressed with the quality of the buggy when I received it. It had gobs of aluminum, and was solidly built. Being kinda meticulous, I went through the buggy with a critical eye to start off.
The suspension settings were way off. Camber was about -10 degrees and the toe- in was just as bad. Five minutes with my RPM camber gauge and it was ready. I thought the suspension was a little soft for a 1/8th scale, so I slid in some 5mm spacers (included) on all the shock bodies.
The servo saver was adequate for the average person, but I tend to be hard on stuff, or have it break at the wrong time, so I added a large style, servo mounted servo-saver in addition to the factory one. The JR590MG steering servo was replaced with a Hitec HS5925MG for a little more steering speed.
Factory assembled engines have a wide variety of QC practices, and I wasn’t taking any chances on ruining a new engine. I removed the engine, rinsed it with fuel, lubed it up and reinstalled it. I also installed a fuel filter. After a radio check, linkage adjustment and chassis adjustment, I decided to start breaking it in. Never having owned a pull start nitro engine, but knowing others that have, I was ready for a headache starting this thing. The instructions would not have helped a novice. On a pull start engine you generally need to plug the exhaust stinger with your finger and pull the cord a few times to prime the fuel line. This one was a little stubborn to prime, but started in 4 pulls after it was primed to the carb. Factory carb settings were good enough to start break in on the engine. It took a couple days to complete the first tank of fuel while idling/blipping the throttle.
A Walk in the Park
It was time to take this thing for a spin!! I’ve come accustomed already to a little squirt of fuel in the carb to prime this thing so it starts on the first pull. It works like a charm. Once it’s been run and warmed up, it will start on the first pull every time without any tricks. It’s just that initial prime (from a dry tank) I’m having problems with? Any nitro guru’s have a better method? I’ll get it figured out or I’m going to break out my starter box.
After my trimming the body to access the pull starter with the body on, I was off to the front lawn. I fired it up, and as soon as it was warm I set it down to take off. Well…. lets say she was too rich to do more than sit there and blubber when I applied the gas. I twisted the main needle in 1/2 turn and away she went.
I must say I was liking the feel of the buggy. I’d describe it as…. a touring car with a little more ground clearance. I ran it around for about 5 minutes and pulled in to check the temperature- 165F. I was happy. It was idling nice and just bogging a hair on takeoff from idle. Once it’s fully broken in, I’ll lean it out and that will be gone. Not to mention, I was happy I could just get it to idle for a minute in 40F weather. The engine has plenty of “snap”, even running rich for break in. All in all, I think the GS Storm Ready to Race Buggy is just that- Ready to race.

I hope we can field a full class of these monsters this year at Fountain Raceway!!
We would like to thank Roostertail (Corey) for taking the time out of his busy schedule to do this review. With the outdoor season coming up fast, hopefully this will help some people that are thinking of jumping into the 1/8th Scale Nitro Buggy scene.
